Further info - if I recall correctly, you used to be able to click on the indicator applet and the messenger would hide or appear. That doesn't happen now.
I thought that clicking the minimise button would make pidgin minimise to the indicator applet, but it minimises to the task bar. Now clicking on the [X] close button on pidgin's taskbar causes pidgin to minimise to the indicator applet and not the task bar. I didn't expect this behaviour - to me the close button means close; minimise means minimise, currently they both seem to mean minimise!
