Comment 48 for bug 648091

This might be somewhat conflicting with not intimidating with the UI, but placing the play etc.-buttons over the video and having them fade upon moving the mouse over and out of the video window and pressing <space> would perhaps clean up the interface and save space.
I think the time ruler should be placed under the video still, but it's a suggestion to move the buttons to overlay the video window.
