Jan, I really like your mock-ups although I don't like the timecode in the preview window in your latest examples, it's making the preview window even smaller than it already is.

Just a thought: maybe it's an idea to move the video controls to the toolbar above the timeline. The zoomslider can go at a bottombar, wich also can hold some more information of the project currently working on. That way you have 3 main bars: at the top, in the middle an at the bottom (I don't know if it's possible or not, I'am not a programmer nor a UI designer).
