I'm going to say no though I'm afraid. The reasons are purely aesthetic -- I just think it looks better without a gap between the controls.
I'm willing to accept though that while it's obvious to most people that a quality of 10 is better than 1, it's not obvious to everyone. My preferred method for solving this though would be a tooltip for the two sliders (something along the lines of "1: Worst, 10: Best"). I'll give serious consideration to including this in the next version (i.e. it'll be in if I've read up on the new GTK Tooltip API by then!)
