Bug Description

Many windows (such as Appearance) will launch to a size that is larger than a netbook screen. As a result, the user must be creative with workspace switching in order to press "ok". Further, the window does not allow resizing, so the user is unable to bring it to a manageable size.

I would prefer that no program be allowed to block resizing (or even set a minimum size), and suggest that launched windows automatically reduced if any of the corners is going to be off-screen.

Thanks a lot for reporting this, however I was unable to reproduce the behaviour you describe. When testing, I reduced the resolution of my display to 800x600 and opened a few of the default apps (Evince, EoG and Totem, Appearance and Displays), but was able to view the entire window each time. What I did notice was that some apps were opening in fullscreen mode, which I assume is what they are designed to do when their default window size exceeds that of the current display.

I notice that Ubuntu Netbook Remix has been included in this report. UNR was running an older version of Unity and the Gnome 2.x stack, whereas Ubuntu 11.10 now runs Gnome 3.x and a radically updated version of Unity, and UNR has since been discontinued.

Can you please confirm whether or not you are still affected by this bug on the most up to date version of Ubuntu?

Thank you for looking into this Mr. Wilson.

Attached is a screen shot of the problem in Ubuntu 11.10 from a fresh install opening dconf Editor (I actually was never able to get netbook remix working on this computer - Dell Inspiron mini). My screen resolution is 1024x600.

Regards,

Matt

I can confirm these issue on my eeePc for many default application dialogs. I'm not sure what the best way would be to improve this (I dont think stopping gnome apps from blocking resizing is a good idea) but I will say that this is a big problem for me when upgrading to a new version of Ubuntu. Some of the upgrade dialogs cannot be easily adjusted in size and the only way I can press the continue button is to hit the tab key and hope its in the right place before hitting enter.

I can accept that some applications might not suit eeePcs and I'm willing to work around these issues but any essential Ubuntu dialogs such as the upgrade dialogs should be reworked to be more friendly to smaller screens.

The best thing would be:
Let compiz maximize the window in case it doesn't fit by default on the screen.

I encountered this issue many times on my netbook. I solved it always by maximizing the window.

Hope this helps.

Thank you - I'll look for that setting. (I think it would be worth implementing that into the distro setup.)

Closing the Papercuts task as there is no benefit in keeping it open. Problems with viewing dialogs on smaller than normal displays should be raised against the relevant applications/packages giving full details of the screen size being used.
