The problem you reported looks the same as described in bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/maria/+bug/955776. The latter exists in 5.3.5 and 5.5.21, but is not reproducible on current maria/5.3 (revno 3459+) and maria/5.5 (revno 3334+). If you are using release builds and encounter the problem again before the fix is released, please try to set optimizer_switch=derived_with_keys=off.

For now, I will close this bug as a duplicate of 955776 -- although yours came earlier, the other one is reproducible on recent releases which makes it easier to chase and track. If you see a reason why it is not a duplicate, please feel free to re-open it.
