Oh, good someone responded.
It seems nearly all of my OS issues- hanging on shutdown, X dying and having to log back in.. have been because of a (new) hard drive with bad sectors. I just replaced the HD and things have been much smoother sailing.
Actually, just nixing the encrypted private folder helped a lot with the open office issues. (encryption is less tolerant of read errors?) But for everything, I needed a new HD.
