Bug Description

Hi all,

Inkscape is a good program, I use it for a while, but one of the most weak points is the groups and layer system. I use inkscape mainly for preparing data for decals and similar "print and cut jobs" So I need a image data in one layer and contour/ cutter data in other. So I create one image, alone with data for cutter, using cut+paste I made multile copies to fit my media in printer and then I separate cutter data to another layer... Good layer and object groups subsystem is absolute nececery for that. This workflow work perfectly in Corell Draw, but with inkscape is one big pain inthe ass. Current group/layer system is as practical as anal masturbation with saguaro cactus, even with inkscape xml editor.

Please make layer/group subsystem a bit Corellish - ie something like Corel draw or ilustrator have and may be something better :-). Hierarchical tree of layers, groups and objects, with posibilities to set layer/object/group as visible, editable(lock unlock) and printable, ability to set a meaningful name for gorups and objects and paths, allow to create a groups based on selecting objects in the tree etc. With this new system, there are two features what would be great. Layer "tint" ability that can temporairy tint with a selected color content of the layer so there is a easy check what is in that layer. And second it is object/group bonding across the layers (ie object "foo" in layer A bounded to object "bar" in layer B), so bounded objects share a fate while resize, move, cut+paste, clone, delete etc...

I think thing this can make inkscape usage lot easier for most peoples as it give a precision control of the layers, objects, groups, paths and Z-orders, hierarchy etc...

I belive that my request is not alone, I found similar requests popping up severasl years in bug/wish list....

thanx.

Yes, this has been requested many times before: filing yet another report about the same request doesn't make it happen sooner, not even if it's a Christmas wish ;)

Please add a comment here if you don't agree and think these are different issues.

(Note: grouping across layers was already filed as separate feature request, too. It cannot be done as long as SVG does not support layers natively: for now, Inkscape implements layers as SVG groups with a special attribute, and objects cannot belong to more than one group at the same time in SVG)

Ok, Thank you.

For object bonding (across the layer or group) I fill another bug/wish , because object bonding is a different thing then mentioned grouping acros the layers and does not require objects to be members of two groups simultaneously.

Adding feature requests buried in the comments of a report marked as duplicate does not work:
It is best to file separate reports for different issues, each as specific as possible and with as much details (including e.g. mockups) as possible.

Probably your latest request would be covered by selection sets which could be saved and reused:
Bug #170286 “sets (named selections)”
