Does not display Devanāgarī conjuncts

Bug Description

Inkscape 0.46 for Mac OS X appears to break apart the consonantal conjuncts/ligatures in Devanāgarī text. I have the text, which displays properly in my text editor (TextEdit) with the Devanagari MT font which comes with the Mac, but when I paste it into Inkscape text, in the same font, Inscape breaks apart the conjuncts into the separate characters. Manually typing it in Inkscape produces the same effect. Attached is a file showing the broken conjuncts. The text should instead look like the text below:
दर्द पीड़ा अत्याचार चोट निराशा दुख चिंता भय आघात

I can't test with Devanagari MT, but everything looks good on Ubuntu 9.04, Inkscape 22183 and 0.46, default font and Chandas.
Do you have the same bug if you change the text font?

Changed in inkscape:
importance: Undecided → Medium

If I compare the on-canvas rendering (attached screenshot) with 'GoodHindi.png' it looks indeed something is missing / wrong. But I have no insight into these font issues and what needs to be done to enable the ligatures for Hindi in Inkscape or pango...

Confirmed that Inkscape rendering on windows vista with trunk revision 12141 is not equal to the screenshot in comment 2.

Changed in inkscape:
status: New → Confirmed

Kevin: could you include a screenshot of the bad rendering on the latest version (if it still occurs)?

I am ignorant, but I seem to get a good result.

Arch Linux 64-bit, KDE Plasma 5
Inkscape 0.92pre1 15073 (GTK3)
