Hello,

I may try again, to see what I can do with your
suggestion. But I had more or less given up.
Producing an .eps file and getting the labels via
\psfrag works, certainly if one goes the dvips
route, and with much greater pain it can be made
to work with pdfLaTeX. The other solution is to
work in Unix, and to use the slightly antique but
effective Xfig.
