Bug Description

Hey,

Just installed inkscape 0.92.1 on Fedora 26.
The color bar is very tiny and scroll bars relatively big.

The screenshot shows the tiny color bar at the bottom of the screen.

Have you seen the options for changing the size of the color fields?
Click on the tiny triangle at the left of the palette, then you will be able to set a height, and a width per color.

Making the size of the color strip huge makes the color strip usable again.
Though you'll notice that the scrollbar of the color strip lies on top of the color strip.

(Additionally, the scroll bar of the document seem too wide)

If the Fedora build is problematic, maybe the flatpak version will be better?

Fedora sometimes seems to publish unstable versions.

su_v tagged his gtk3, from this I conclude that Fedora packagers thought it would be a great idea to use the experimental gtk3 mode.

I don't know what Fedora packagers decided for stable Inkscape 0.92.1. The screenshot attached in comment 1 however shows unstable trunk (Inkscape 0.92+devel) (e.g. the rotation widget at the far right end of the status bar belongs to a new feature that only exists in unstable trunk) - in contrast to the stable version mentioned by the reporter in the bug description.

As far as I am aware, the reported palette scrollbar issue is only exposed with recent GTK3 (as are the overly wide canvas scrollbars - described in more detail in bug #1655647 comment 4).

This should be fixed for Inkscape 0.93 as it's a highly visible (and heavily used) part of the UI.

Changed in inkscape:
status: New → Confirmed
importance: Undecided → High
milestone: none → 0.93
summary: - Tiny color strip makes color selection difficult

I played around with the environment variable "GTK_OVERLAY_SCROLLING=0" which should disable automatically hiding scrollbars. Unfortunately it does not change the amount of scape allocated for the scrollbar, i.e. the size of the UI element does not change.
