1. Oddly, when I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron" a few weeks ago, this stopped happening. Now I can maximize the window on my 1280x768 screen all I want.
2. I've had the same problem as j_baer since before upgrading (and still have this problem): clicking "use small icons" in the preferences menu does nothing. Hunh...
