Hi. I'm totally new so please forgive me if this is of no help or you already knew but here is my workaround for Inkscape not showing these characters:

If I type up a wingding (or webding) in Word and paste it into Inkscape it still doesn't work and I get the 'empty clipboard' message. However, if I type one of those characters up in Word, and then go to the font properties and add an outline, I can then paste it into Inkscape and it does work.

So what I do is add the smallest outline possible in Word (.01) at the same color as the character and it looks great. Not sure why that works but it does.
