Bug Description

I have the current portable version and I try to select Source Sans Pro Light, but it jumps to Source Sans Pro (default/regular) or the font I chose before.

Why can I not load the Light version of Source Sans Pro?

I've tried OTF and TTF versions.

Please provide information about your OS/platform and Inkscape version (see Inkscape menu 'Help > About Inkscape'). 'current' is bound to change over time.

Can you confirm that the font you installed is 'Source Sans Pro' v1.050 downloaded from the official site?

I am using Windows 7 Home Premium and the latest Inkscape Portable version (0.48.4-1) from portableapps.com

Yes, I have downloaded it again just an hour ago to check if it is a problem with the font itself.

Not reproduced with Inkscape 0.48.4 r9939 and 0.48+devel r13290 on OS X 10.7.5
(all available styles are applicable - in stable 0.48.4 via 'Text and Font' dialog only - and work as expected, for the TTF as well as the OTF version).

Attached screenshot was made with 0.48.4 and the OTF version of 'Source Sans Pro' v1.050.

THe portable version?
If I open the font selectoin list and click on the Light version or some other than the regular, it jumps to the regular version.

Is this Windows specific?

The text and font dialog works, but the select input/list at the top in Inkscape does not work when we select some text and change the font using this approach

AFAIU reported earlier, e.g. in bug #986742, underlying issue in bug #590719.

Please avoid mixing unrelated issues within one report - this is impossible to track properly.

To be expected [*] - with current stable, the text tool controls bar only offers two buttons for the basic styles (bold, italic) - other available and supported styles of the font are only accessible via 'Text and Font' dialog.

Note: the next major release (0.91) will have a new dropdown list on the text tool controls bar which lists all available font styles (the same ones as listed in the dialog).

[*] “SVG directly supports Bold and Italic/Oblique styles. You can toggle on and off these styles (if the font family supports them) by clicking the corresponding buttons in the Tool Controls or with keyboard shortcuts: (…) A font may have other styles available (e.g. narrow, semi-bold). All possible styles (including Bold, and Italic/Oblique) can be selected in the Style section of the Text and Font dialog.”

Which list do you refer to? In current stable 0.48.4 there is only a dropdown list with font families (not styles) on the controls bar of the text tool. The only styles accessible via text tool controls bar are 'Bold' and 'Italic'.

Maybe this is indeed a Windows-specific issue with current stable 0.48.4 (on OS X, with current stable 0.48.4 (and with trunk), there is only one entry for 'Source Sans Pro' in the font family dropdown list on the controls bar of the text tool). I'll refrain from further triage since I don't have access to Windows, and can't fully comprehend the reporter's descriptions.

@JazzyNico - could you take a look at the described issue on Windows?

See the attachment, this problem exists with the dropdown at the top when you select the font tool.

Confirmed on Windows XP, Inkscape 0.48.4.
Workaround (as noticed comment #5): change the font family from the Text and Fonts dialog.

Not reproduced with trunk revision 13293. Selecting Source Sans Pro in the Font Family field and Light in the Font Style field works as expected and the style doesn't jump to normal (regular).
