An alternative impementation to pRototpe's suggestion is to implement grid cell subdivision.
Currently, there is the option "Major grid line every X", which groups cells together. An additional option "Subdivide gridlines in X" would be very useful in both our cases. I could set the regular grid to 0.75' (34px in pRototpe's case) and set Subdivide gridlines to 8 (100 in in pRototpe's case).
