Can't disable node handle snapping

Bug Description

When moving a path node or handle, there doesn't seem to be anyway (other than zooming in) to prevent snapping to nearby nodes, guides, etc. In previous versions holding Shift would do this, but this no longer seems to be the case. This makes it difficult to move handles near path nodes or guides, since they'll constantly try to snap to them instead of staying where you put them. (Using latest version from inkscape-trunk PPA.)

Holding shift worked for me when moving nodes, but not when moving their handles (e.g. when trying to change the curvature of a path at a specific node, by using the node tool). That has been fixed in rev. 11791. If the shift key still doesn't behave as expected then just let us know! We might not be able to fix this in all cases because the shift-key might be taken already for other stuff, but at least we can have a look at it.

Some related fixes for live path effects and for editing objects in general have been committed in rev. 11800.

Thanks for reporting, and feel free to reopen this bug if needed or to submit a new one!

Indeed in the latest build, holding shift disables the snapping of the handles to adjust curve - but it also causes both handles to move at the same time, so it doesn't really solve the problem.

Revision r11991 introduced the known modifier conflict with 'Shift' for the node handles as discussed e.g. in the comments 1-3 of
Bug #538487 “Opposite symmetric node handle does not snap to grid”
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/538487>

A major change wrt to snapping in trunk compared to current stable Inkscape 0.48.3.1 is that nodes themselves now only snap if an additional (former) snap target is enabled (none is enabled in default template), while node handles still always snap (default template). This slight inconsistency in default snap behavior makes a modifier to temporarily disable snapping of node handles more relevant (IMVHO).

In current trunk (r11905) and in stable, the only solution to disable snapping of node handles without conflicting with other modifier usage within the node tool context is to disable 'Snap nodes and handles' on the snap controls bar.

Reopening.
