Revision r11991 introduced the known modifier conflict with 'Shift' for the node handles as discussed e.g. in the comments 1-3 of
Bug #538487 “Opposite symmetric node handle does not snap to grid”
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/538487>

A major change wrt to snapping in trunk compared to current stable Inkscape 0.48.3.1 is that nodes themselves now only snap if an additional (former) snap target is enabled (none is enabled in default template), while node handles still always snap (default template). This slight inconsistency in default snap behavior makes a modifier to temporarily disable snapping of node handles more relevant (IMVHO).

In current trunk (r11905) and in stable, the only solution to disable snapping of node handles without conflicting with other modifier usage within the node tool context is to disable 'Snap nodes and handles' on the snap controls bar.

Reopening.
