Ok XSANE (release 0.996) when launched first says "Looking for devices".
Then it gives the following message:
"Error: Not possible opening device 'hpaio:/usb/HP_ Color_Laserjet_CM1312_MFP?Serial=00CNB886DH4P' I/O error on device". (I translated from italian so it's not the precise english error message, but the sense is clear).
Therefore, no way to scan or see the device !!

I tried to remove comments from the last two lines of /etc/sane/hp.conf
so that it appeared :
scsi HP
# Uncomment the following if you have "Error during device I/O" on SCSI
# option dumb-read
#
# The usual place for a SCSI-scanner on Linux
/dev/scanner
#
# USB-scanners supported by the hp-backend

# Uncomment the following if your scanner is connected by USB,

/dev/usb/scanner0
option connect-device
BUT NOTHING CHANGED !
Actually I've libusb installed but I tried anyway...
(I RESTORED THE COMMENTS, so the file is like I found it !!)
About libusb there is one strange thing (to me at least, as I told you i'm a dummy with linux!) but i refer you if it is of any importance: if I check installed packages via Synaptic i find both libusb-0.1-4 (2:0.1.1214ubuntu0.2) AND libusb-1.0-0 (2:1.0.6-1) !!
I'm wondering if this can cause any conflict...? I beg your pardon if the question is stupid and useless. If it is so , ignore it.
