Bug Description

System: openSUSE 11.1
Printer: HP Laserjet Pro M1536dnf MFP
connected via LAN

In hp-setup the printer is recognized and is shown in window "Select from discovered devices". Then I click on "Next" and a plugin is downloaded. The window "Select from discovered devices" appears again and I click on "Add Printer".

Nothing happens, except this error message in the console window:

Hi Raj

thank you very much for your effort so far.
sorry, but I cannot try it with latest opensuse, that is 11.3.
I have 11.1 and there the "ordinal not in range(128)"-error-message occurs.

I have tried also on my second computer, also opensuse 11.1. There is the same
problem.

Best regards
Roland

Hi Raj,

I now updated my system to opensuse 11.4 and tried the installation again.
Unfortunately, the installation window does not continue to "Step 3 of 3" when I click on "Add Printer"-button, but stays at the view "Step 2 of 3".
However, after clicking on the "Add Printer"-button the mouse-pointer changes for several seconds and the computer seems to "do something in the background".

What can I do?

Huether (r-huether) wrote : FW: Re: [Bug 710850] Re: automatic installer stops at "Add printer" => Problem solved!

Hi Raj,

today I tried the installation again, this time with USB-connection and - no surprise - it also did not work.
I got the same error message when clicking the "Add Printer"-button as earlier before:

UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xc3 in position 757: ordinal not in range(128)

After thinking for a while, a had an idea:
My last name contains the German character "ü" which is also called "u umlaut", maybe you know it.
Right in after buying the printer, even before connecting it to a computer, I set up the fax properties right on the printer's display and sent faxes afterwards. In the fax setup I entered my name in the - correct - German spelling, with the u umlaut.
Now I thought, that this might be a problem in connection with 'ascii' codec and I changed the spelling from Hüther to Huether.

Then I reran hp-setup and - big surprise - the error was gone and the printer was installed.

Maybe you can improve the installation routine in this respect, e.g. show a warning message not to use special characters in the fax setup of the printer.

If you need further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Best regards
Roland

Hello, everybody!

I have the same problem with my HP LaserJet 1536dnf MFP.

When I try to add the device (network connection) via "HP Device Manager" it finds the device, but when I click "Next/Add Printer" it "thinks" for about 5 seconds and stays on the same screen.

My OS is OpenSUSE 11.4 (latest updates installed)

In console I see the following:

The trace shows that the problem appear in "/usr/share/hplip/ui4/setupdialog.py" file, in line 1068 (or 1058 in the original trace from Huether.

As far as I can understand, these lines contain retrieval commands for initial fax information:

self.fax_number = unicode(d.getPhoneNum())
self.fax_name_company = unicode(d.getStationName())

If fax functionality is not of high importance, there can be a workaround applied by hardcoding the initial values. Just change the lines to something like:

self.fax_number = unicode("1234")
self.fax_name_company = unicode("home")

This allowed me to proceed with printer setup.
