I always try things like this in VirtualBox, but I couldn't reproduce your problem this way… don't have an idea how to get this problem.
About HAL: this is a dependency of hwinfo, which I'm using to find out which screen resolutions are available on the grub menu. hwinfo is not required (just recommended), so you're able to install Grub Customizer without HAL, but then there's no list of available screen resolutions.
