G.C. removed both entries for a kernel when I unchecked only 1

Bug Description

There were too many old kernels listed in the Grub2 boot menu. (I am using Ubuntu 11.10)

The latest kernel, the one I want, was listed twice, at the top and in the "earlier versions" section. This is annoying and may be considered a minor bug.

More importantly, however, is this: I used Grub Customizer and unchecked all old kernels, including the "earlier version" appearance of the latest kernel. I left the first appearance of the latest kernel -- it's the only one I need.

But when I rebooted, there were NO appearances of Ubuntu kernels in the boot menu, and it was quite a bother to fix this

Details on the fix are in my Ubuntu Forums item here : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11407029#post11407029

However, the core bug I am reporting is the fact that Grub2 deleted all my kernels as described above.

Please attach theese files:

/boot/grub/grub.cfg
/etc/default/grub

On my system I cannot reproduce it (Ubuntu 11.10 too), but maybe I can fake the situation by using the files above.

  • grub Edit (888 bytes, application/octet-stream; name=grub)
  • grub.cfg Edit (5.8 KiB, application/octet-stream; name="grub.cfg")

Files attached. Of course, these files may represent the current state
rather than the earlier state, in which which there were about eight
"earlier version" kernels, including the most recent; and the most recent
also appeared by itself (with its recovery mode) at the top.

Currently the most recent appears by itself at the top (with its recovery
mode) , and there is a line in the boot menu mentioning "earlier version",
but there are no earlier versions following it-- i.e., the section is empty.

You wrote about duplicate entries, but every entry from your grub.cfg is unique:

Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-12-generic
Ubuntu, with Linux 3.0.0-12-generic (recovery mode)
Previous Linux versions
 -> Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-11-generic
-> Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.38-11-generic (recovery mode)
 -> Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-33-generic
-> Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-33-generic (recovery mode)
[memtest and windows follows]

Do you see something differnt, when starting your PC?

Actually, in the boot menu now, only the first two appear (the latest
kernel versions in regular and recovery mode). The "Previous Linux
versions" header appears but there the section is empty.

The bug in question is :
1. (Lower priority and perhaps not a problem with GC). The latest kernel
appears at the top and under "Previous Linux versions"
2. (Higher priority and related to GC) When the above occurs and all items
in Previous Linux versions, including the latest version, are unchecked in
GC, the latest version no longer occurs in the top section, even though
that was not unchecked in GC.

Perhaps we should wait until my Ubuntu undergoes some kernel updates.

Then, if problem 1 recurs, I will get back to you.

Then, if you want, I can try to use GC to reproduce problem 2 (and hope
that I can restore things!)

Hmm… ok, if the problem isn't reproducable before the next kernel update I'll wait…

Nervertheless, if there are to many old kenels in the boot-menue

the recommended way to remove these items from GRUB2-Startmenue is rather to remove them from the system

then to unmark them in GC. (keeping in mind each old Kernel consumes approx. 200MB)

Daniel, it might last a little fortune-time until the Kernel-update appears. Don't you think you could reproduce the behaviour using e.g. VirtualBox.

Looking at Comment 4 in http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?s=b19beee5b276cc7db1a526c415840822&p=11415516&postcount=4

worries me little bit. Probably a complete removal of GC would have helped at this stage. BTW: I would like to see GC work in Kubuntu when HAL is completely removed there.

I always try things like this in VirtualBox, but I couldn't reproduce your problem this way… don't have an idea how to get this problem.

About HAL: this is a dependency of hwinfo, which I'm using to find out which screen resolutions are available on the grub menu. hwinfo is not required (just recommended), so you're able to install Grub Customizer without HAL, but then there's no list of available screen resolutions.

Changed in grub-customizer:
status: New → Incomplete
status: Incomplete → Invalid
