When Friends grows the ability to block users, obviously checking the block list then is a good idea. As regards your other point, I agree that it's hard to know how often to check, but some sort of balance can indeed be struck.

I note that if Friends used the Twitter streaming API, it would be delivered block messages instantly. :)
