Using Karmic same problem, the following workaround fixed it for me:

sudo rm /etc/fonts/conf.d/10*
sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig

The next post claimed that it messed up their Opera fonts... but I think I used the same workaround in Jaunty without any issues.
