Don't want to disappointing anyone but the solution provided by @pads doesn't work for everyone.
1) the solution for legacy cards (2xxx-4xxx) does indeed work
2) but the second solution only works for users with only a AMD/ATI GPU. Anyone who has a ATI/Intel hybrid card can only use the open source drivers.
The ATI/Intel Hybrids still seem to suffer from a regression compared to Ubuntu 12.04 and the previous AMD Catalyst drivers.
I have just tried the AMD Catalyst 12.11 beta driver fresh out the press at AMD and it still doesen't work for me.
I have a AMD Radeon HD 6490M with an integrated Intel 3000 HD card running. Laptop is Samsung Chronos 7 700z3a-S03-DE.
