Bug Description

After years of training, explaining, and answering questions about it, I'm finally submitting a request that we change the term "grocery" to something more understandable to non-Evergreen-developers. Training staff is one thing, but when patrons receive billing notices from either Evergreen itself and third-party bill collectors, and the bill description uses the term "grocery" to describe the billing, that creates confusion on the part of the patron and frontline staff have a hard time explaining what it means.

I would initially suggest the term "miscellaneous" to replace it? Maybe "manual billing"? In any case, I think a change, at least on anything that end users can see, would improve certain customer service situations.

Evergreen 2.7.2
OpenSRF 2.4
PostgreSQL 9.3
Ubuntu LTS

I concur. "Manual billing" captures most of the use cases and is about 100x easier to explain than "grocery".

Last time I looked at changing this in our system, I think I found that the raw category name was coming directly from the underlying database table, so some code to support decoupling the label (for internationalization purposes as well) will likely be necessary.

I have a slight preference for "staff," but would also be happy with "manual" or "other." All of these options are better than grocery.

I prefer 'manual'.

As charming as grocery is I agree it needs to die.

I had a thought about this today. Is there any actual benefit to making this distinction at the UI level at all? Why distinguish between circ/grocery and a dozen billing types when you can just show the types? It's still a useful distinction in the database (but it's not like we're changing the name of money.grocery) but I don't think it serves any useful purpose at any layer where a human is involved. Has anyone heard any indication that staff care about this at all beyond making the word "Grocery" go away?

I'm inclined to agree with Jason here. We could eliminate the dropdown menu where users are forced to select grocery anyway and then remove the column picker option to display the Type. The Billing Type and Billing Note could continue to be available in the UI, which tends to have more useful information. mmorgan suggested in IRC that we might want the Billing Type and Billing Note to display by default if we do remove the Type field.

However, Jeff Godin noted that it might be more likely to get a simple label change in before 2.9 since the change wouldn't be as complex as removing the grocery bits from the UI altogether.

My question is whether anyone has the tuits to follow up on Jason's approach in time for 2.9? If not, I'll put a poll out to the general list next week to see if we can come to consensus on the label change.

At first brush, removing the dropdown, etc. makes sense to me. Also, my hunch is that removing the display is going to be the simplest route, particularly since, as Dan S. mentions, changing the label correctly would mean adding missing decoupling/internationalization bits.

I'm way too sleep deprived to know if I'm missing something here but the
proposed UI changes sounds like a simplification and I'm all for
streamlining the billing interface anywhere we can.
