Why does the overlay scrollbars have to be so thin?

It's frustrating trying to use them, for example when I have a folder with hundreds of files inside a good overlay scrollbar is essential, but using such thin scrollbars is extremely hard and unconfortable.

What about who use the trackpad then? Often it's more confortable to use the scrollbars, if they were usable...
