I highly doubt it is to do with not having AIO. Without AIO behaviour is as it has always been. AIO will only work with Linux, an AIO compatible filesystem and O_DIRECT enabled in InnoDB, in the dtr drizzleslap tests I've done it makes no performance difference having it on/off.
