I have the same problem (maybe since the unknown error is too generic) (or maybe I've the same bug in https://bugs.launchpad.net/deja-dup/+bug/539393).

I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 (64 bit) and I've installed deja-dup 14.0.3 using the stable PPA (https://launchpad.net/~deja-dup-team/+archive/ppa).

I've done a backup every day since 26th april in a local partition (ext3) and yesterday I've moved all the files in an extern drive (an ext3 partition too). When I've tried to migrate my data to another laptop with Ubuntu 9.10 I've discovered this problem.

The data in both drives are identical since I've checked via md5sum for paranoia. I can reproduce the bug in both machinces (same deja-dup version installed with the same PPA). The backups are crypted.

When I try to restore, after the preparing step it starts to extract my data and after a while I receive this sad generic error. I've also tried to restore in a directory but with no lucky.

The only thing I see is this message in console "** (deja-dup:3678): DEBUG: DuplicityInstance.vala:552: duplicity (3723) exited with value 1".

The problem is not related to FAT (since I use ext3) and I can reproduce using both internal and external drive.

PS: I don't know if this is the right place to write because the error is too much generic, there is another bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/deja-dup/+bug/539393) maybe related.
