Playing any kind of video (in vlc, smplayer or HTML5) for a longer time, usually 20-30 minutes, frequently ends up hard-freezing the desktop. Almost hard-freezing, actually: the cursor moves, but keyboard input isn't accepted so it is not possible to do anything other than reset the machine. There is a variation where the sound continues to play.

I chose Unity as my best guess, it hasn't happened under other desktops so far. (Maybe it should be Compiz?)

This is Ubuntu 14.04 (amd64), on a Radeon card (RV635) with the default OSS driver.

Please advise on how to provide additional info. I poked at Xorg.0.log but it doesn't seem to have anything useful.
