Restarting compiz under LLVMpipe fixes the problem:
    env LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 unity --replace

Also, my other laptop (Intel i5 / HD 3000) running all the same packages is unaffected. It only seems to be the Atom graphics driver affected (i915)
