It's not clear that logging in to Ubuntu SSO only logs you in to Ubuntu SSO

Bug Description

If a user comes direct to Ubuntu SSO, it's not clear that logging in will *only* log you in to Ubuntu SSO. To log into another service (eg: Ubuntu One), you actually need to log in from that service. Otherwise, it can be a very confusing experience.

I'm curious how you got to this page by entering your credentials. The most obvious way would be by accidentally clicking on a touchpad because doing it by keyboard requires pressing 'tab' exactly 6 times after you've entered your password.

The support form never asks for your password. It also doesn't have those menu links. I wonder if you've pasted the wrong link with the support form, above?

That means you've experienced bug #603812. Sure, it doesn't make sense to say 'successfully updated' when nothing changed but it's hardly a big deal, hence the 'low' priority of that bug.

Did you just say you *didn't* want to do that?

This happens because you logged into SSO earlier in the process. I assume, from all of this, that your original aim was to log in to Ubuntu One? If that's the case then the biggest question here is: how did you get to the account management page (the one with the update button) from the main login page? As we haven't had reports of this from other Ubuntu One users, I'm thinking it might be some kind of accidental click early in the process which messed up your workflow. It would be helpful if you could log out of Ubuntu One and try logging in again to see if the same thing happens.

I don't have a touchpad. I use a trackball.

Besides which, this sequence is repeatable.

Okay, let's do it again.

I am in Firefox 10.0.1 running under Mac OS X 10.6.8 and I go to https://login.ubuntu.com/ which is a sign-in page.

I sign in with a valid ID and password, using 1Password. This takes me to https://login.ubuntu.com/ but it's a different page.

The heading of this page is "ubuntu single sign on" (all lower case on an orange background)

It offers the links I cited before: Applications, Log out, Update, etc., and offers two places to "Choose password" and "Retype password". Leaving those blank, I click on Update and a checkmark in a green disk appears with the annotation "Your account details have been successfully updated". Repeated clicks on "Update" produce no change. Evidently we're in a loop.

At the bottom of this page is a list headed "Sites you last authenticated to". There are two entries:
 https://launchpad.net 2012-02-13
 https://one.ubuntu.com 2012-02013

Clicking on one.ubuntu.com indeed takes me to a https://one.ubuntu.com/ which is headed "ubuntu" (in orange) and "one" (in black) on a white background. The page wants me to sign up for services that I either don't want or have already signed up for. At upper right it says "Log in or Sign up".

Clicking on "Log in" goes to https://one.ubuntu.com/dashboard/ where I am welcomed by name. Evidently I am already logged on. However, the site seems to think my name is "John A. <email address hidden>". That needs fixing so (omitting the details) I change that to "John Varela" and then find myself back at https://login.ubuntu.com/ with the panes to update my password.

Again clicking on https://one.ubuntu.com I am taken back to https://one.ubuntu.com/dashboard/ where my name is still wrong.

At this point I just logout. This takes me to a page that says I have been logged out but I'm still logged into https://one.ubuntu.com/ and there's a link to "Return to Ubuntu One" (note capitalization). Clicking on that takes me back to https://one.ubuntu.com/ where, in the upper right, it still says "Log in or Sign up".

So! Am I logged in or not?

I click on Log in and this time am taken to https://login.ubuntu.com/tpnndT6wNLx4x528/+decide, "ubuntu single sign on". I again enter my UID and password from 1Password and I'm back at https://one.ubuntu.com/dashboard/ and this time my name is correct.

Trying again to get out of this, I again click on "logout" and am again told that I may still be logged into https://one.ubuntu.com/

At this point I just close...

Except the part about the sso-support form in your first report, which
isn't mentioned elsewhere in your follow-up, so I'll assume it was
pasted in error.

If you want to log in to Ubuntu One, you should start *on* Ubuntu One (I
think this might be where your problems begin). Here's what I see when
I try this:

 1. Go to https://one.ubuntu.com/
 2. Click "Log in or Sign up"
 3. Enter my username+password in the Ubuntu SSO login form
 4. Press 'Enter'
 5. I arrive back at the Ubuntu One dashboard, logged in.

Please try this, starting at https://one.ubuntu.com/ and tell us what
happens.

This is a known issue, related to bug #579017

You're not logged in.

I'm sorry that you've experienced so much trouble logging in to Ubuntu
One; it's clearly caused you some confusion and frustration. However, I
get the impression that the main problem (other than being bitten by a
couple of existing bugs) are related to unclear wording in one of two of
our pages, specifically:

 * The list of "Sites you may still be logged into" on logout.
 * The login page on Ubuntu SSO. You somehow started the process of
logging in to Ubuntu One on the Ubuntu SSO service and, consequently,
never left. Did you come to login.ubuntu.com manually did you follow a
link from somewhere else, expecting to be logged in to Ubuntu One? We
may be able to improve the direction to...

You put your finger on the problem. I was working on the assumption that there is one Ubuntu web site with branches to Ubuntu SSO and Ubuntu One. Evidently they are linked but not integrated.

I entered Firefox by clicking on your link above and logged on with no problem, starting from the iMac.

Thank you.

A word of explanation: I use an iMac desktop for all my Internet activity. I am retired, so for use when traveling I bought a little Samsung netbook. The Samsung came with Win7 so I installed Ubuntu on it. We are planning a trip so I have been checking out mail access and so forth on the Samsung. To the extent I can, I work from the Mac simply because this 27" screen and trackball are so much nicer to use than that teensy netbook screen and touchpad, which is why I was trying to access Ubuntu One from the Mac instead of from the Ubuntu netbook.

While I have you on the line, however, maybe you can answer a question for me. I have a Gmail account for use only on the Samsung. (I don't want anything of value compromised in case the netbook is lost or stolen while traveling so no information of great value is on it, not even my Verizon email account passwords.)

What I would like to do is to transfer my address book from the iMac to Ubuntu on the Samsung and make it available to Thunderbird or whatever other mail program might be easier.

I have transferred my Mac address book to the Samsung as a single file of many V cards, but haven't been able to figure out how to import the addresses into an Ubuntu app. Can you point me to a man page or something that tells me how to do that? Surely there's a way. Thanks again.

Glad we cleared that up; thanks for taking the time to help us understand and resolve the issue. I'll change this bug description to acknowledge the fact that it's not clear, if you come direct to SSO, that you need to log in via the service you're actually trying to log in to.

As for the address book import, it's not something I have any experience with. The best place to ask would probably be http://askubuntu.com/ where lots of really helpful and knowledgeable Ubuntu users hang out.
