This is ubuntu desktop. I found that if I did:

sudo hciconfig hci0 lp HOLD,SNIFF

while everything was disconnected, then the audio started working properly.

Now I'm back here because after a reboot it wouldn't connect at all, so I guess I need to fix the pairing or something.
