Graeme, I understand your frustration. I too am an iBooks user, and I'm annoyed that Apple has built their garden wall even higher with the release of Mavericks. I spent several months implementing iTunes support for calibre, and now with Mavericks, all that work is obsolete.

In a nutshell, the problem is that iTunes offers an OSA (application automation) interface which made it possible for calibre to communicate with iTunes through AppleTalk. The new iBooks app for OS X, which has taken over book management under Mavericks, does not offer an OSA interface. So there's no simple solution to replace the functionality.

The available alternatives at this point:
- Revert to OS X 10.8
- Use calibre's content server and iOS's 'Open in' functionality
- Switch to Marvin (ePub) and GoodReader (PDF), both supported by the iOS reader applications plugin.

I am looking for ways to implement a new approach, but as I said earlier, I have no idea if or when that might happen.

It's also possible that another calibre developer may decide to tackle this.
