my kernel is 2.6.31-14-generic. in post #74, I went to tty console and typed sudo stop gdm and afterwards sudo pm-suspend. It worked for one time. I don´t know if it always works.
In post #71, I was in gnome-terminal and X and first typed export PM_DEBUG=true and then sudo pm-suspend.
