Looks like a wrong version check in the maintainer script for detecting upgrades. Wasn't a problem before because update-alternatives was always called in the postinst add our new alternative; now that we're deferring the alternative installation, this version check needs to be fixed, or else new installs of the package will fail consistently.

This bug was fixed in the package flashplugin-nonfree - 11.2.202.228ubuntu3

---------------
flashplugin-nonfree (11.2.202.228ubuntu3) precise; urgency=low

  * Only try to tear down old alternatives on package upgrade, not on new
installs; the latter now fails since we're not installing our own
alternative from the postinst anymore. LP: #975426.

Good evening from Michigan, USA,
I have just had this problem happen this afternoon -- I had started a new installation of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (final beta / beta2). (I used a freshly downloaded and burned install CD that I had just downloaded and burned today, earlier this afternoon, also.)

I don't know what flash version was trying to install and apparently did not succeed in installing correctly.

However I have a suggestion please -- as flash is certainly not critical, why not make it a VERY last step... so much so that it is not even installed until AFTER the new Ubuntu install has succeeded in booting itself up from the install (i.e. target) media device first?

Thanks all! -Matt

try it again. it was borked for me several hours ago, too. it worked flawlessly 5 minutes after the fix was committed. there's no problem with your install media or the image you used.
