Bug Description

I have a HP Pavilion dv6-6186nr with "Beats Audio" (whatever that means). As best I can tell, the notebook has four speakers: two under the grill at the base of the screen ("top") and two along the front, under the wrist rest ("front"). When playing audio through the headphone jack, everything works perfectly (including muting the speakers). However, playback through the speakers reveals two problems:

1) There is no bass coming through the speakers. Only midrange and treble is produced. This isthe major annoyance.

2) Sound is only produced from the two top speakers. I don't particularly care about this fact, but perhaps it's a clue to what's going wrong.

Various online resources have suggested adding options to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf. I've tried each of the following individually without effect:
  options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1
  options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dv5
  options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4
  options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m4-1
  options snd-hda-intel model=hp
One option did make a difference: this produced sound only from the front speakers:
  options snd-hda-intel model=ref

In the sound settings "Hardware" tab, I have chosen the "Analog Stereo Duplex" profile; none of the digital options work.

I wonder if perhaps alsa thinks there is a subwoofer, and is therefore shunting the bass away from the speakers. But this is just a WAG.

Flailing around blindly in hda_analyzer, I've found that I can get sound out of both the top and front speakers. If I change the connection of Node 0x0f from 0x13 to 0x14, I get sound out of all four speakers. Moreover, I can control the volumes independently. Node 0x13 controls the volume of the front speakers and Node 0x14 (which claims to control the headphone volume) controls the top speakers. Set at the same volume, the top speakers seem louder, but this could just be because the top speakers are pointed more directly at my head.

This is all with no options enabled in alsa-base.conf. Both sets of speakers still are missing the bass. I've attached the diff that hda_analyzer gave me.

(Un)Fortunately, it appears the no bass bug (2) is a hardware problem. I also got no bass when testing in Windows.

As for the only top speaker bug (1), I tested two more options in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf:
- "model=auto" had the same behavior as the majority.
- "single_cmd=1" didn't fix the speakers, and it broke headphone sensing.

I am having the same issue with my dv6qe for months now. I've just about given up. Would be really nice to have all four speakers playing. With 12.04 I can fade between front and rear and when I fade to rear, all sound goes away. I've tried all the alsa-base.conf settings mentioned and could not get anything to make all four speakers active.

Steak dinner to anyone who can get this resolved.

Joe H.: Here's the Python script that hda_analyzer spit out for me. I don't understand what it's doing, but it works for me. Maybe you'll be lucky and have it work on your machine too. It doesn't look like it needs any special packages, so it should run for you. Note that it needs to be run as root to have the permissions it needs. (And of course, you should never run scripts from strangers on the internet as root...)

Can you tell me if you're getting a good bass sound out of the speakers? HP has offered to take the computer in for repairs, but I'd like to know whether I'll see much of an improvement for giving up my computer for a few weeks.

Hi Robert.

I do not get any out put with this script. i have Python 2.7.3 installed.

If it try to run without sudo and get a permission error, but running the
script with sudo seems to not do anything..

That's a good sign -- like all well-designed UNIX scripts, it is silent
on success. The question is, did it enable all four speakers?

I will have to check. I expected it to either make the tones or spot
out a result file. I do not think it enabled all the speakers though.
Will have to check.

Hi. This script had no effect. I even ran it while music was playing. Mine
is a dv6tqe, slightly different than your model. Are there things I can run
to give you extra info that maybe resolves the minor differences in
hardware? I"m really interested getting this fixed after 8 months. In
windows, the speakers sound amazing, however that is definitely not enough
reason to use Windows.

You could run `ubuntu-bug audio --save=bug.txt`. This should produce
the same information that I attached at the top of the bug report. You
can either go through it and see what's different, or just post it and
hope that someone who knows what they're doing will take a look at it.

Alternatively, you can play aorund with HDA Analyzer
(http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/HDA_Analyzer) and see if you
stumble upon a solution.

I was able to play around with hda analyzer and confirm pretty much the same thing as comment #3 describes.

For my laptop, rear is for top speakers on Node 0x14, front is bottom speakers on Node 0x13,

On my system (dv6tqe), Node 0x0f defaults to output selector 0x14 which seems correct, however Node 0x14 is muted, which is why I get sound from bottom only. Once I unmute val[0] and val[1] at Node 0x14, I get all four speakers working. I can even fade between them in the control panel.

However, as soon as I adjust the volume in application or system (via panel or keyboard) the top speakers get muted again. I can reenable them by muting and unmuting 0x14 in hda analyzer. I"m assuming it's muted but the GUI was not updated. So the setting is not permanent. It's undone as soon as volume is adjusted rendering this workaround useless.

I have not tested the impact on the headphone jacks but I assume they should be fine as I did nothing but unmute the top speakers (or rear in control panel, which feels right because the bottom spekers are in the front of the laptop). I can attach teh output of bug.txt if that would help.

Also, I do not have any changes done to alsa-base.conf. I tried several but commented them out. I am not sure how to ensure everything is vanilla but I believe it to be. If there's a way to ensure everything is default and vanilla let me know so I am not giving information that only works on my modified configuration
