Bug Description

I've attached a theme planned for Plank in Luna. It would be great to give Slingshot the same white glassy look and feel so both launchers look connected/united.

Targeting for Luna but marking wishlist; if it's too difficult, screw it.

Marking egtk affected because this might be preferred to be set by the theme.

It doesn't look like I can set alpha in the background-color property for popovers. We could do this in Compiz but the problem is that *everything* becomes semi-transparent including text and icons. So, I think we're actually waiting on Granite here.

summary: - make Slingshot look & feel similar to the dock
+ make Slingshot semi-transparent

But but but...

I thought the whole idea of the dock and panel being black was they are out of your way until you need them? Of course, I'm probably incredibly biased since the current/previous dock theme was made by me. But to be fair, it was a refined version of the one in Jupiter (with spacing and transparency worked out more).

I always wondered why Dan used a white dock and I never liked it. ;)

Anywho, looking forward to more discussion on this.

In case you didn't figure it out, I'm commenting on the plank theme above. I was told in IRC that it was becoming the default, but I haven't seen/heard any discussion on the matter.

So far GTK's compositing is not that straightforward. You can make the popover-window-area transparent, but not the widgets contained inside it from the theme.

We'd face the same problem in Granite as well. We can make the entire popover transparent, which would make the text and everything transparent, and that's not what we want.

Also, I thought the whole metaphor was that the light theme variant
represented transient paper-like things. Making them look like glass
doesn't make sense IMHO.

AFAIK the point of this change in Slingshot is to visually link it to the dock and make them stand out of the rest of the desktop.

I believe something like http://ubuntuone.com/7D7C5HqUCd2D9tJqToSm1n will work better than two distinct launchers and that tweak won't be needed, but that's L+1 item obviously.

If Slingshot transparency can't be implemented for Luna, I'd rather fall back to a dock theme that's consistent with Wingpanel.
