Bug Description

Alt F10 no more maximizes window. It was doing so before. I've not changed any settings in compiz, so think it's a regression.

Thanks

Ever since Natty, Alt+F10 has been used to bring keyboard focus to the global menu/indicators. It was never used to maximize windows.

By "it was doing so before", do you mean it used to do that back with a pre-Natty release?

Unity design has decided to use Alt+F10 to show menus starting in Ubuntu 12.04. This means you can no longer use Alt+F10 to maximize a window.

WORKAROUND 1:
1. Run "ccsm" and go to General Options > Key Bindings.
2. Scroll down to "Maximize Window" (or "Toggle Window Maximized") and change the keyboard shortcut.

WORKAROUND 2 (should work, but doesn't seem to!?):
1. Run "ccsm" and go to Ubuntu Unity Plugin >Behaviour.
2. Disable "Key to open first panel menu" (Alt+F10).

Hi
Thanks Daniel. FYI - Your first workaround was already enabled on my
system. Then I went to your workaround 2, and disabled that - then it
seemed to work on my system.

Thanks

So how is one intended to maximize a window with the keyboard (without a workaround)?

Also the keyboard shortcuts help (the one displayed by holding super) shows ALT+F10 as maximize window

The duplicate status is wrong. Bug #878492 is about F10 being mapped to the current window's menubar, while this bug is about Alt+F10 being mapped to the new panel menu.

Before an upgrade to Precise Alt+F10 used to maximize the current window. There seems to be no way to restore this functionality using pre-packaged tools: when I open System Settings -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts -> Windows it still shows Alt-F10 as the shortcut for maximizing.

If you write click on a window it tells you the shortcut to maximise the window is alt+F10 (even though this is not supposed to be the proper functionally).

The workaround in comment #3 does not seem to work for me -- even after disabling the Alt+F10 shortcut in ccsm > Ubuntu Unity Plugin > Behavior, I continue to get the "menu popup" behavior instead of a maximized window.

I can successfully change the shortcut key to something else (e.g., Super+Up), but then it is inconsistent with all other Linux machines I use, where Alt+F10 is the shortcut to maximize a window. Since right-clicking on any window's title bar shows Alt+F10 as the shortcut and the posted workaround does not work, I think this should still be considered a bug.

It's the first thing i've seen after logging on Ubuntu 12.04 : why the hell has the behavior of ALT+F10 been modified ?
ALT+F10 has been a standard for a while for maximizing windows on Linux, it's a real non-sense to alter this behavior (even if it can be reconfigured, i don't need to spend times on each of my Ubuntu computers to modify things that shouldn't have been altered).

This is the first bug, I've noticed in 12.04. In natty Alt-F10 maximized the window. This behaviour has been changed. Also I am using Gnome 3. I can understand changing the behaviour in Unity, that's under your purview, but why is this change affecting Gnome 3 under ubuntu as well?

Key-sequence --> behavior on my 12.04.

<ALT> --> shows menu
<ALT>+<F10> --> the above + opens file menu
<ALT>+<F10>+<F10> (quickly) --> all of the above + closes file menu
<ALT>+<F10>+<F10>+<F10> (quickly) --> all of the above + maximizes the window

Ridiculous workaround!

I've upgraded today from a native 11.10 install to 12.04. I ran into this issue, started searching and landed on this page here.

After reading the thread I wanted to try the workaround from comment #3. So I installed ccsm. But now I'm really confused: The ubuntu unity plugin is NOT enabled. So why is the keycombo linked to the menubar anyway?

So I found launched the "system settings" menu, choosed "keyboard" -> "shortcuts" -> "windows". There I saw that maximize/restore is mapped to <ctrl>+<super>+<arrow-up>/<arrow-down>. Setting <ALT>+<F10> in this menu does not help, so I decided to live with new shortscuts, because they seem logical. But I really do not like this.

Hi,
what is the proposed shortcut for maximize then?

If i look at the ccsm settings -> key bindings tab then it still shows that MAXIMIZE WINDOW is ALT-F10.

In Ubuntu 12.04, holding down Super in Unity shows the Ubuntu shorcut keys.

On my insallation, in the windows section it says Alt+F10 maximises the current window (actually, control super Up does that - and it suggests control super down for minimise). And in the HUD section, it says Alt+F10 accesses the indicator menu!

I don't know if this is hard coded or based on key bindings - I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10.

I'm also quite unhappy about this change. You say it's been this way since Natty, but that certainly hasn't been my experience: it first broke for me after upgrading to 11.10 and I've been faithfully following releases.

Is there anywhere we find the design rationale for such decisions of the Unity team? These kinds of shortcut-key changes seem arbitrary and I would love to know why they aren't.
