Bug Description

In precise 12.04 alpha (dec 8 build, alt iso), Either or both Xubuntu or Ubuntustudio (and presumably others) when the iso is installed on a laptop/netbook using the wireless device for a network connection. On boot the network manager does not show a list of available wireless networks. (in Ubuntu Studio the applet doesn't even show) If the wireless connection started during boot fails, network manager is unable to cycle the connection.

If the install is done by failing the network connect and installing with no network connection, on reboot the network manager works as expected.

hi len,

thanks for reporting this bug.

i'm not sure if this is a pervasive problem for others as well, but ubuntu studio will be making some more changes to the seeds to bring it in line with how xubuntu handles networking.

hopefully during alpha 2 testing we can revisit this bug and see if it still persists.

thanks again,
scottl

The way you're explaining this, it sounds as though it's an issue that comes from an update; since there is no change in network-manager since oneiric (yet), it's most likely not a bug in network-manager or network-manager-applet.

Changed in network-manager (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

I downloaded and tested xubuntu and it has the same problem. I should
probably download/install ubuntu desktop and try that... if the bug is
there too it will get more attention ;-) When I tested Xubuntu, I didn't
see a difference in networking really. Our icon doesn't show up if the NM
is not handling networking, xubuntu has the icon show up but it is not
usable as it should be.

I'll test ubuntu desktop now (this weekend) so they know about it.

It is an installer problem. Once network settings are put into the startup
files NM doesn't manage that interface. For a laptop that is unacceptable.
I may have to re-visit oneric to see what the difference is.

So then you could just edit /etc/network/interfaces, remove the entries for wlan0 or eth0, and reboot to make it work again? This certainly clarifies things.

Please confirm that this workaround works, but this would indeed be an installer problem.

I think so, My desktop has U Studio 11.04 and I have it set as a static ip
using the init.d stuff. NM on that machine shows ath0 as "not managed"
too.

I had thought of that, but figured even if that did work the install was
still broken. However, I will try it on my next install. I will also be
downloading ubuntu desktop (Alternate) and try that. I suspect the live CD
version may not have this problem, just the alternate install. I haven't
tried Xubuntu live CD, just the alt and it has this problem too. I don't
really have the time to start trying live cd installs right now... the
alts keep me busy enough.

Yup, that works to fix the problem.

This bug affects ubuntu desktop as well (precise alpha alternate iso) Same
thing, remove the wlan entries from /etc/network/interfaces and things
work as they should.

Whatever has been done seems to have fixed this problem in the last iso I have tested. Thankyou.
