Bug Description

When the Compaq nc6400 is on battery, it freeze randomly (mean time 15 minutes).
Everything including the move get frozen, however it SysRq key works.

Please find attached some info taken on the netconsole: the cpu-backtrace, and some complaints from processes.

I can see that the both CPU are blocked in acpi_idle_enter_bm+0x227/0x25e

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag(Only that one tag, please leave the other tags). This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed by the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream-KERNEL-VERSION'. For example, if kernel version 3.2-rc1 fixed and issue, the tag would be: 'kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.2-rc1'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

I've tested with 3.2.0rc4. It still freezes, but not the same way. It freezes "more slowly" (reproduced 3 times).
At first, I can move the mouse, but the clicks and the keystrokes fail.
Some background applications still operate (I could see a blinking cursor on a gnome-terminal), but there is no way to interact with them.

However I can switch to the text mode consoles (Alt+Ctrl+F1 or F2...). Sometimes I can type in, but I does not last long (just the time to type my login, no chance to type the password - If I ever get the password prompt).

At this point, I could use SysRq. You find 3 files attached.
I noticed that both Cpu stacks are at: cpuidle_idle_call+0xab/0x1d0

Then, install the deb file. You might be able to double-click on it, however the standard procedure is to use the command line:

sudo dpkg -i linux-image-(...).deb

It installs automatically and registers in grub.

You just have to reboot and select the new kernel at boot time.

Good luck

Emmanuel, grazi mille.

For about four years I have had this HP nc6400 running Gentoo and more
recently, Ubuntu. In both, it exhbited this bug, and froze all its
onboard inputs after an apparently random interval when running on
battery. The kernel version you found and shared has freed it from
being chained always to the power converter. It's just like a real
laptop, now!

Many, many thanks,

[hp nc-6400, kernel 3.3.0-030300rc7-generic ]

Unfortunately, with another day or so of experience, I have to report
that this does not fix my freezing-inputs-on-battery-power problem,
after all. Three times now it has returned, just the same as ever.

Interestingly, there *has* been an improvement with the kernel change;
the suspend-on-close, which never really worked under Ubuntu (although
I eventually got it to work with Gentoo, once), now works just fine.
At least something is better about this kernel on this system!

Regards,

What is aspera? The Latin for "hope." It's some high-speed file
transfer software. But I'm stumped to see that word here. Jost Menke,
what do you mean?

Now on my second day after installing the kernel whose .deb you linked
to (HP Compaq nc6400, Ubuntu 10.4), and so far the old symptoms have
only shown up once. (Kernel freeze, perhaps, because the keyboard,
mousepad, and all onboard inputs cease to have any effect, and only
powering down is possible, yet the screen doesn't freeze.)

The one freeze incident coincided with having try to re-connect to
some Boingo Hotspot which was being unusually difficult. The problem
has long seemed tied to high room temperatures, and the use of
wireless. Could be that these simply give the kernel more to do,
making some collision more likely?

Anyway, this fix is testing well so far. Thanks, Jost!

Kernel 3.4 fixes the problem on my HP nx7400, after several days of testing I can say that I am sure about this, no more freezes in the meantime. ATM I am running 3.4 RC4 on Ubuntu 12.04. Too bad 3.4 won't make it into the official release of 12.04. So the question is, is there a way to find out what causes the freezes and backport the stuff needed to kernel 3.2?

No problem about the aspera confusion.

I can now confirm that installing
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.4-rc3-precise/linux-image-3.4.0-030400rc3-generic-pae_3.4.0-030400rc3.201204152235_i386.deb
has completely addressed the original issue. It is a final fix. My hp
nc6400 now operates correctly (no kernel freeze) while on battery
power. This is the first and (so far) only fix I have seen, after
several years of searching for a solution!

I may try 3.4-rc4 at a later point. I'm happy to have a fully portable
laptop for now.

Many thanks for the idea,

Too bad 3.4 won't make it into the official release of 12.04. So the question is, is there a way to find out what causes the freezes and backport the stuff needed to kernel 3.2?

Sadly, I tried both rc3 and rc4 with and without Wifi, and my Hp NC6400 still freezes. I guess there is some non-compliant electrical behaviour in it.

I also guess that the kernel has some smart behaviour when on battery, and that this behaviour is too smart for my laptop. How can one disable it without disabling all the ACPI subsystem?

On battery, using built-in WiFi, it is still freezing randomly.
I would say that it freezes rather when I'm browsing the web.

I've tested with v3.4-rc5-precise with Wifi and without Wifi.
In the both case, it freezes. When Wifi is on, it freezes in 15 minutes. Without Wifi, it is longer: 1hour or more.

I tried rc6 kernel off-battery twice today.
- without Wifi, I could use my laptop without problem for 1 hour without any problem. I had to stop the session before the battery exhausts for business reason. I'll retry longer latter.
- without Wifi, it froze after 20 minutes. I first noticed that the machine started slowing down. The CPU was not used a lot. I turned to console using Alt-Shift-F1 and tried to log in. I succeed, but it was damn slow before I could get the prompt. I opened an other console (F2), it was the same joke.
It seemed that running processes where running correctly, but starting new processes was very slow.
When running Top in console, there were no strange process behaviour.

Then I got a message from the kernel on the console. Please find attached what I've found in my kern.log.
30 second later, I had to REISUB.

I'll start do it (IRQ...) this evening.

Beside, I noticed that since at least RC5, I get the following error messages on the console that is behind X11.

May 23 14:17:38 smeagol kernel: [ 2159.336747] ata5: ACPI set timing mode failed (status=0x300b)
May 23 14:17:38 smeagol kernel: [ 2160.360122] tpm_tis 00:04: A TPM error (7) occurred attempting to read a pcr value

It occurs at each boot, and each time when I suspend and wake-up the machine.

This morning, I encountered again the same problem as in post #32, however without Wifi (note that I misstyped in #32, the second bullet is "with Wifi"). I tried the sync command on the console, and it took at least 20 seconds. Then I pressed the hardware suspend key and the machine freezed with the kernel telling :
[<time and date>] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! [power.sh - 3940]
and some other lines that I have to extract from my phone-camera.

I've tested the procedure in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingIRQProblems.
– noapic → freezed
– pci=routeirq → freezed
– pci=noacpi → freezed
– acpi=off → test in progress, but in this mode, the advanced capabilities of my video card are disabled, so it switches to Unity2D. I has not frozen... yet.

I'll try again the test using Unity 2D if you think it is relevant.

I am also experiencing the same problem on the NC6400 running Ubuntu 12.04. I believe that I have found a duplicate bug in launchpad, see Bug #998379.

Is there any possible/planned fix for this issue?

Hi, problem still exists - does not appear to be linked to cpu load as sometimes the freeze occurs when there is very little activity.

Still exisiting problem. Yesterday I used the laptop for over 3 hours on battery, doing various tasks including using transmission & firefox, and laptop did not freeze at all.
Today laptop froze within 2 minutes of logging in. Had got as far as loading transmission, and Firefox & was just changing to a different website when laptop froze - on this occassion no mouse either.
On some occassions in the past the laptop has frozen - windows not responding, although it is possible to move the mouse around the screen - does not respond to mouse clicks though, or normal shortcuts such as alt+f4.
Always reboots using REISUB, although screen remains frozen until the final B is reached & reboot starts.

I have the same problem with a HP NC6400.

X is freezes when on battery, usually when I'm browsing the web. I still can move the mouse. It's strange, because if I clicki on a menu, nothing happens UNTIL I press the power button. I can right click and then press the power button and the context menu shows.
Doing Alt-F2 I land on the console, I can type my login and password but it never log me in.

I did not upgrade from Ubuntu 10.10 until last month because I had a similar bug in ubuntu 11.10, but it was immediate during boot sequence.

So, you could not get the computer to freeze on or off battery using this kernel parameter?

As well, as per http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=ca&prodNameId=1847704&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=1847703&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1093#120 your BIOS is outdated. Could you please upgrade to the newest one (F.0B) and comment if this problem is still reproducible?

Also, could you please test http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.6.2-quantal/ ?

I am sorry, but I can't proceed any test anymore because I don't have this
laptop anymore as my company provided me with a new (more powerful) one.

Actually, the few tests that I could perform on Unity2D did not hang.
However, the screen resolution was too poor for using it many hours.

Your hypothesis about the outdated kernel is interesting. I hope other
people will be able to test it.
