Confirmed. Bug occurs when you close Xine. Suspect this is a Metacity bug, but must investigate.

Can recover visibility by pressing Super+S to reveal Spread (you see nothing however), and then hitting Escape. Then things return to normal.

Turning off compositing does not change anything:

gconftool-2 --set --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager false

But turning it back on again restores the visibility:

gconftool-2 --set --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager true

xwininfo -all returns interesting. I suspect this is a Metacity bug.

I tried using kwin instead of metacity and the bug goes away.

Similar bug reported here: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=606431

No solution found, but original reporter found it occurs with other WMs.

Also I believe the same bug opened here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/396590
This bug was marked duplicate of a similar sounding Compiz bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/147943 which I think is wrong.

I don't use xine, but I hit the same symptoms when my laptop came out of sleep and I unlocked the screen.

I had exactly the same problems and they were all fixed when I restored the default video drivers which had been corrupted. Here's the fix:
