Bug Description

I am trying to install Ubuntu on a PC with an AMD A6 A3650 4-core APU, but unfortunately at the point where plymouth should start, the monitor plugged in in the VGA port turns off, and is never turned back on.
The PC boots Windows 7 (preinstalled) and works fine.
Tried installing with Wubi from Windows, tried from LiveCD with various kernel options.
THe only option that helped me to see a bit more was the nomodeset option, but that got me only to a console complaining that my card needs KMS to work. So can't install or boot Ubuntu.
Please tell me what other info should I provide (I'll do that from the root console I get to when using nomodeset).

Using 64bit LiveDVD, md5sum checked, and is OK.

Thanks for your bug report. I'll target this to the kernel as it concerns a problem booting the LiveCD. To make this report more complete, though, please add the version of Ubuntu that you are attempting to install, and the graphics card in use on this system. After you add that to your report please mark this as confirmed so the kernel team knows its ready to be looked at.

affects: ubuntu → linux (Ubuntu)
Changed in linux (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete
summary: - ubuntu seems to boot but screen turns off after grub

I am using an AMD A6-3650 APU with an integrated ATI Radeon HD 6530D graphics chip integrated, tried to run the Oneiric installer.

This seems to be a regression from 10.10, as the 10.10 32bit installer starts up normally, and is working, while 11.10 32 and 64 bit have this behavior.

The issue seems to be with the Linux kernel 3.0, probably caused by the newly introduced AMD Llano Fusion APU support introduced, as 11.04 also works, but distributions using the 3.0 kernel turn the screen off when the kernel initializes (tried Fedora 16, OpenSuse 12.1, Linux Mint 12 RC, Ubuntu 11.10 ). This problem has also been reported on the ubuntu forums, see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1860032.

Similar issue upstream:

However, that is with the 3.1 kernel.

From grub, edit the boot config and change "set gfxpayload=$linux_gfx_mode" to "set gfxpayload=text". Also remove "quiet" and "splash" from the kernel boot line.

This bug seems to be a duplicate of bug #825777.

It looks like this issue has been fixed upstream in kernel 3.2-rc1.

There are some test kernels in bug #825777.
