Hello Michael,

I am a new linux user, and only moderately proficient with computers at the
best of times, so forgive me if I ask a stupid question, but here goes: how
do I re-install it?

Best regards,
Garth

Hello Garth,

Some ways, but probably the easiest is to:

open a terminal session (Gnome Terminal, or kconsole, for example); then
type in:

    sudo apt-get update

You will be asked for your password; reply with it;

then type in:

    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

apt-get will (most probably) show you many packages that are going to be
upgraded, accept and, at the end of the process you should have
recovered from the issue.

If you are still confused, please do not hesitate to contact us again.

Hello,

Your suggestion below seems to have fixed the problem, and I am now able to
download updates.

I do have another problem that come up in the last few weeks.

I am connected to the internet via cable. A few weeks ago I was not able to
connect to the internet simply by clicking on the mozilla firefox icon. In
Network Settings I can check the box that enables network settings but when
the network settings box is closed the setting is not saved, and the message
remains that the "wired connection is not configured". i am able to connect
to the net by typing in commands in my terminal.

Thanks very much for your help,

Garth
