Bug Description

== SRU Justification ==
Many (but not all) devices including an Intel 82579LM NIC have a hardware fault that results in packet loss

== Fix ==
Upstream commit 0ed013e28fe853244f4972cf18d8e2bd62eeb8fc

----------

Many (but not all) devices including an Intel 82579LM NIC have a hardware fault that results in packet loss that is worked around by the following recent patch: http://patchwork.ozlabs.org/patch/109926/

More detail provided here: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=713315

It would be useful for this patch to be applied to the distribution kernel in current supported releases as this fault exists on a large number of recent devices.

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the reference to the upstream patch. I've built an Oneiric test kernel with the patch applied. Could you please test and let me know your results. Assuming results are positive I can submit this for Oneiric SRU. If you happen to be running Natty or an earlier release, let me know and I can build you a corresponding test kernel for that release as well. Thanks.

Thanks for the immediate attention and test Oneiric kernel which I will test on Monday.

The patch resolves issues with a teaching/research lab of ~200 Natty hosts so I would be grateful if this was considered for a Natty SRU as it makes these simpler to maintain. I have tested the same patch with Natty and can confirm it works successfully.

Thanks.

Hi Terry,

I've built a Natty test kernel as well with the patch applied. If you could also test it on one of the affected Natty hosts that would be great. I know you mentioned you'd already tested the patch with Natty, but I want to double check that I haven't some how blundered the patch we'd officially apply to the Natty repo. I can then also work to get this submitted for Natty SRU. Thanks again.

Hi Leann,

Both the Natty and Oneiric kernels have been tested successfully on several machines and resolve the issue at we are seeing.

Thanks.

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed-oneiric' to 'verification-done-oneiric'.

If verification is not done by one week from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!
