Gateway Atom netbook. Default Unity. Previously upgraded from 11.04. Unknown display driver (not 3rd party). Oneric updates by Update Manager. Previous daily updates have been uneventful. After required reboot, two attempts to log in hung with either an arrow or an X cursor on a black screen. Had to hold the power button down to power off; system froze. After two reboots I could log in, but the wallpaper shrank to fill only part of the screen. Then a closing application (Gjot?, just installed) started looking smeared like a fuzzy, duplicated image of itself. Followed by failure pop-up windows and requests to report.

After a partial upgrade (I think about 120+ software updated), rebooting and login, this error occurred. After this upgrade, I also cannot see any icons (eg, time) at top-right corner, don't know if it's a new setting or bug.

Comment from duplicate bug #865358: Ooh, wow. It's failing to connect to X. Could you please try the packages in https://edge.launchpad.net/~raof/+archive/aubergine which should (a) not crash in this circumstance, and (b) print a little debugging information to .xsession-errors.

This is the 2nd time no icons (e.g., time and date) shown on the top panel. I didn't do anything special when the error occurred, I think. Ubuntu may want to give a stronger warning when users want to upgrade to such an very unstable beta release (I have almost reported 10+ bugs after upgrading).

Ignore about the sbin crash, never seen before, hasn't occurred again
For me this crash is related to this - Bug 863054 & to note - this crash & that bug never occur if gdm is used instead of lightdm

This particular crash is harmless, although it's a symptom of something else going wrong. The code which invokes check_gl_texture_size fully expects it to crash sometimes, and handles it. Once apport is turned off the only way you'll notice this crash is a SIGSEGV message in dmesg.

Of course, until the underlying problem which triggers this (which would be associated with bug 863054) is fixed, you'll still have the other symptoms caused by that.

I am using Ubuntu 11.10 development branch with Unity

This occurred after a reboot following the latest update: Oct 5, 2011 @ ~10:15 AM EDT.
I did have to reboot twice. The first reboot left my touch pad / mouse and keyboard unresponsive and I had to use my power button to shut down and restart.

It followed a crash of the Ubuntu One Indicator which said it could not be reported because it was not a Genuine Ubuntu package.
The Ubuntu One Indicator did start.

This bug was fixed in the package gnome-desktop3 - 3.2.0-0ubuntu4.1

---------------
gnome-desktop3 (3.2.0-0ubuntu4.1) oneiric-proposed; urgency=low

  * debian/patches/02_refuse_to_break_GL_compositors.patch:
    - Add extra paranoid checks to fail gracefully in the case of errors in
      check_gl_texture_size. Eliminates (otherwise harmless) crashes.
      (LP: #862161, LP: #862998, LP: #861804, LP: #861548)
    - Wait for check_gl_texture_size no longer than 500msec. Ensures that
this check will not block the desktop, as in (LP: #871188).
  * Remove debian-changes patch which accidentally reverted the change meant
    to be applied in 3.2.0-0ubuntu4.
