I am able to open the Software Center just fine, but I cannot install/remove anything in it. This is described in bug 897984 which was marked as a duplicate of this one, although I did not see any associated error messages or Apport windows.

Ran a partial upgrade today and I'm still seeing this with software-center 5.1.3.1. This time I did get an Apport window, which led me to duplicate bug 849553.

@Harry: Probably, but hopefully it gets fixed much sooner than that, especially since it is marked as Critical.

Same bug on ubuntu 10.10 amd64, software-center 5.0.3.1.

This appens after some manual package installation (I suspect dropbox or mendeley)

The application list is also broken on unity, and apps cannot be found not search on the pannel. Persist after reconstruction of the application index, using apt-get update and upgrade, nor apt-get -f install, nor sudo apt-get install 4g8 && sudo dpkg --force-depends -r libnet1 as found here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoftwareCenter#broken-catalog

The bug appeared on a brand new installation of ubuntu (2days, just installing my progs)

Here is attached the report of the software-center --debug please note that I used no proxy and disabled third party packages sources and apt-get update. After these lines, the terminal is freezed

Please note that, once the command is launched, there is no way of killing it in the terminal by ctrl-C and the process is not visible in "top".

Hope it can be useful

By looking at the different reports available in the different bugs, i notice that the backgound of the bug and the modules implicated are way different. In mine, it start with a proxy ploblem, and some other it's a database that is corrupted.

There may be different bugs that makes the software-center to loose itself. It's possible to produce the bug by intalling an external packet. Some people report skype package, but for me it's others.

Can one that know the arcanes of the app center fix that? It appears to be really critical. On the top of that the system is not usable easily anymore, since the app list in the panel does not display apps anymore.

Sorry, I take my earlier comment back. It seemed that the Software Center was working fine. But no, I can only search applications and view their info, screenshots etc. But when I click on Install button, nothing happens.

At least here on a 12/31 image the upgrades today to *aptdaemon* - 0.43+bzr756-0ubuntu1/ *dbus * - 1.4.16-1ubuntu2, ect. have seemingly fixed S-C

It now opens fairly quickly, & more importantly installs/removes packages with no issues or hangs. Tried multiple times.
