Bug Description

Binary package hint: flashplugin-nonfree

The current flashplugin-nonfree from the official Ubuntu Natty repositories (10.3.181.22) "flickers" when displaying Flash content in Firefox 4.0.1. Some parts of the content are visible, others are not. This changes, when parts of the content is updated or the mouse is moved over. This bug makes essentially viewing videos impossible, but also flash-based audioplayers are affected.
However, Chromium (and maybe other Webkit browsers) is completely unaffected.
Downgrading Flash to 10,3,162,29 via this PPA https://launchpad.net/~sevenmachines/+archive/flash "solves" the problem, but one is stuck with an outdated and presumably insecure flash version.
I'm not quite sure if this a flash bug or a Firefox bug.

This happens to me as well on Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. And for me the issue does not occur with Chromium either, only in Firefox 4.

Have not tried the Flash downgrade yet.

I just stumbled across this blogpost: http://www.glasen-hardt.de/?p=1254 Unfortunately, for some of you - but not for me *g* - it's in German). https://launchpad.net/~glasen backported nspluginwrapper 1.4.2 and made a PPA for it. The current version of nspluginwrapper in Ubuntu Natty is 1.2.2 (more than two years old).
I've added his PPA, updated nspluginwrapper to 1.4.2, disabled the sevenmachines PPA with the old Flashplugin and installed the current flashplugin-nonfree from the Ubuntu repositories (10.3.181.26), and voila! It works. I tested some pages (where I remembered the flickering) and all display issues where gone.
So actually this could be a problem of nspluginwrapper.

You find the PPA here: https://launchpad.net/~glasen/+archive/nspluginwrapper

Same as #1 here. Occurs on Firefox on Ubuntu 11.04_64 but not Chrome.

It seems to me that the latest Flash update (10.3.181.34) has resolved this issue for me.

Nevermind, it seems that I am still seeing artifacts with the 10.3.181.34 update.

I have a good news. After the last "Beta" update of Flash Player 11 this bug in almost cases disappear for me.
Can anybody test it too? It would be wonderful to leave this problem in the past. P.S. Manual for installation on Ubuntu 11.04 you can find hear http://digitizor.com/2011/07/14/install-64-bit-flash-11-ubuntu-11-04/.

Per Artoum.

Might still indicate a problem w/ nspluginwrapper, since this is not used w/ 64bit flashplayer.
For testing, you can use the videos at http://www.longtailvideo.com/adsolution/demos/ by the creators of JW Player, which was the source of most flickering for me.

Artuom, are you sure this is really 'Fix Committed?'

For Scott Talbert.

I tried Beta Flash Player 11 (64 bit) in 6 different PCs with Ubuntu 11.04 (64 bit) and didn't find any problems. And I got the same positive results from Matt Gallagher. (I know that there were ideas that the problem is with nspluginwrapper, I think that the problem was with compatibility). The stable version of Flash Player 11 will be released soon and certainly will be in Ubuntu repositories. So I think that's mean that this bug is "Fix Committed". If I'm wrong correct me please.

I think that "Fix Committed" would mean that the flashplugin-nonfree
package has been updated to use Flash Player 11 and checked into Ubuntu's
version control system. I don't think that has been done yet, so I would
recommend setting it back to "Confirmed."

Hi. I have exactly the same problem with the AdobeFlash Plugin (10,3,181,34 ), using Ubuntu Natty (64 bits) , and Mozilla Firefox (5.0, 1.0 for Canonical Ubuntu). I'm not an expert, but probably it is a matter of compatibility or a trouble with the plugin itself. I have a laptop with Windows 7, and when I updated AdobeFlash to the first release of the 10.3 version, it was a disaster. All the flash-content of the web pages was wrong.
Well, I hope this problem to be solved.
