I am subscribed to bugs and this caught my eye, (by accident while tagging this bug by mistake I deleted) I have similar problem.
I went to forums two weeks ago and posted this question to this problem but no one answered. thread link:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1753762

No matter what kernel I boot into makes no difference, note also does not work on PCLinuxOS 2011 Gnome

Interesting that "Hard Info" detects Card Reader...All controllers are detected as well

"n my title I've wrote that my Asus does not read/see SD Card

However the "Hard info" detects SD/MMC Card Reader

Asus G73Jw
Card Reader-8 in 1 card reader SD,SDXC,MMC,MS,MS-Pro,MS-Duo
I trust it is Realtek

My Ubuntu 10.04 x64 Rocks, everything works including all the tricks with the Compiz. All the contoolers seems to work fine too.
the SD Card is very handy especially when you switch between OS's

All from what I googled I'm getting answers few years old and none applying to my machine.

I would really prefer not to play with ndiswrapper (if possible)
This is a minor problem however annoying one. "

I won't post here all the detailed info since the starter of this bug did it rather nicely....any way I will attach the hard info printout

Hi Brad,
Do the hotkeys for brightness and volume work on your G73? I've filed a
separate bug on that as none of mine work, even after going through the
hotkeys troubleshooter.
Thanks,
Boyd

@Boyd You directed your question to Brad but you mentioned G73Jw machine.
None of the Hot Keys (keyboard brightness, volume, Wi-Fi toggling etc ) do not work either.
Bug #787855 ...could be this connected with as same bug? or it was already filled out under a different bug?

Thanks

Sorry Peter, I meant to email you, not Brad. I have indeed filled out
another bug report for my hotkeys not working on my G53SW but I thought I'd
ask you personally if the hotkeys on your G73JW worked.

Hello, I'm affected by this bug and the hot keys problem but I have a worse problem, when I attach a device to the USB 3.0 port the computer frezzes completly. Someone have this problem too?

@Ricardo : same problem here, w 11.04 and kernel 2.6.39 (USB3 plug freezes).
as regards brightness hotkeys, this is a problem with nvidia driver configuration : add
    Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
in xorg.conf "Screen" section and this should work perfectly.

Card reader does not work either, same hardware so this is no surprise..

Hi eoerl, It didn't work for me, I created the screen section because I didn't have one but after reboot It the X's stop working. Then I tried to put this in Device section but didn't work either.

This is my xorg.conf (I commented screen section to be able to login using X's)

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Default Device"
        Option "NoLogo" "True"
        Option "RegistryDwords" "PowerMizerEnable=0x1; PerfLevelSrc=0x2222; PowerMizerLevel=0x3; PowerMizerDefault=0x3; PowerMizerDefaultAC=0x3;
EndSection

#Section "Screen"
# Option "RegistryDwords" "EnableBrightnessControl=1"
#EndSection

I really don't know why "Device" is the only section I have, usually in other linux installations I have screen, monitor, device, mouse, etc etc. Could you provide your complete xorg file?

Have you find a workaround for volume and playback hotkeys? I rarely use de SD card, I don't have any USB 3.0 device, I feel confortable using the screen brigthness at MAX and the backlight of the keyboard is just a luxury :) but lose the quick control of my music is a real real pain.

Hi,

same bug here, with Kubuntu 11.04 (I tried both 32bits or 64bits), on a Asus G53SW. The SD card reader doesn't work at all. I can see nowhere it has been detected. No mention it in dmesg, as the first report said.

I cannot tune precisely the backlight but, I still can have it switch on/off, so that's ok for me (but having it is important to me...). The sound control doesn't work either, but I don't really care... my problem is really the SD Card, I'll probably try back with Ubuntu 10.04 :-)

sorry to have been so long to respond, I thought I would have had some signal from launchpad in any case, and got none..

It should work with a proper xorg.conf, maybe that yours had a mistake in it ? I generated mine using nvidia-config (you need to have nvidia driver), it is as follows :

it works perfectly as regards brightness with this. For volume hotkeys, I installed asus-kbd-backlight from this ppa : https://launchpad.net/~flozz/+archive/flozz/+build/2018613
It works very well for volume and screen brightness, but you'll need a patched kernel to make the keyboard brightness work (I forgot where I got it, have a look on google ?) Music controls do not work however (I'm sure it's possible, but I actually prefer doing it with the mouse on the volume icon :-) )
No news about usb3 and sd-card reader though, maybe with newer kernels or 11.10 ?

Hi eorl, I posted this in other bug:

Ricardo Sansores Aguilar (rsansores) wrote on 2011-07-25:

If someone is still interested, I have installed just now the 3.0 generic headers of the kernel and all my hotkeys are working just fine. The backlight isn't working but I'm almost sure the problem is not related to the Asus WMI driver, it must be something different.

I will try my USB 3.0 and SD card soon and report if this are still not working.

cheers,
RSA

Ricardo Sansores Aguilar (rsansores) wrote on 2011-07-28: #38
I tested the USB 3.0 and the SD Card in the linux 3.0 kernel as promised. The USB 3.0 is working just fine (or it looks like), I haven't tested the transmitions speed but at least is working like an USB 2.0 and there's no more freezes.

The SD card is not working yet, like someone mentioned even the dmesg doesn't detect any plug and play change. Any information about how to activate the backlight is accepted.

Regards,
RSA

So the good news are that we will have a serious improvement out of the box with ubuntu 11.10, at least it looks like.
