I can confirm I am also getting errors loading sessions. This may be
related to the new gnome-session released a day ago. Please make sure
gnome-session and gnome-session-common are installed and up to date.

I'm currently running UGR on Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64) final with the "dev channel" repository enabled along with the standard UGR repositories.

I just did a 'apt-get dist-upgrade' which, among other things, upgraded 'gnome-session' and 'gnome-session-common' to 3.0.1-0ubuntu1~build2. I restarted and had no problems logging in. In fact the time from login to an actual usable Gnome 3 desktop has been greatly reduced as before this recent update it took several seconds from login to usable desktop. After this recent update the time has been cut down to only 2 to 4 seconds.

As I said, I've added the new "dev" channel repo so perhaps that's the reason I'm not experiencing the error? And just as a suggestion, in order to make these bug reports more informative some basic information should be added such as the Ubuntu build (64 or 32 bit) which was in this case, and whether or not the "dev channel" repo has been enabled or not.

Update:

I should add that the previous update to 'gnome-session' and 'gnome-session-common' (3.0.1-0ubuntu1~build1) did not cause any login problems either. Using same settings as in my previous comment.

so..tried out that ppa with dev versions, no chance; installed a fresh natty 32 bit, did an upgrade, dist-upgrade, added the ppa´s installed as mentioned at the homepage, got an gnome sessions dependency error, did apt get dist upgrade with -f option, installed ugr and gnome panel and rebootet...

same error with the sessions window

What happened here was that the GNOME3 team put out a version of
gnome-session and gnome-session-common two days ago that was bad. They
just uploaded a new one that probably fixes it.

no, did an apt-get upgrade via recovery terminal session, still do have the " failed to load session"sessionname" error in gnomeshell or ubuntu, the only working part is the recovery terminal

Gnome-session had it's dependencies changed, so it won't upgrade using
apt-get upgrade. Run apt-get update, then apt-get install
gnome-session.

I must be missing something here, maybe my reading abilities are faulty, but even the link provided by DrPaulaner says clearly:

"DO NOT install this on a production machine, THERE IS NO DOWNGRADE PATH. THIS HAS NO WARRANTY, AND IT COULD SERIOUSLY MESS THINGS UP. "

How can we be more clear that we're in early development?

That's not to say that bugs shouldn't be reported, but we do need to recognize what's a true bug and what's simply a matter of development catching up over all.

@Eric completely true

@DrPaulaner What is the error message like? Is it exactly the same as described, with a failed to load session _____ and a logout button? If it isn't, this is probably your bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ugr-meta/+bug/756546
Otherwise, this issue has gone away for everyone else and can't be replicated anymore, so there's virtually no way for us to fix it right now, unfortunately.

@erick: yes, i am able to read and to UNDERSTAND that it is an early early alpha version, but it i - in my opinion- an hard bug, so i do report. Sorry for that.

@ JC yes it is exactly as i was reportin and it is NOT like in the bug you did link; ido NOT have an desktop with docky, only a tiny logout switch window telling me that it is unable to load session "sessionnameinhere"

@DrPaulaner I appreciate your paitence as we work through this bug. Please run the following commands so I can check the installed versions of your packages:
dpkg -s gnome-session
dpkg -s gnome-session-common
dpkg -s ugr-desktop-g3

Remember, the Ubuntu session probably won't work, but everything else should.
