zip drive fails to mount

Bug Description

I'm running Kubuntu 6.06 with an internal iomega zip drive. It looks like the installation identified that I have a zip drive and it put an icon for it on the desktop. However, when I insert a zip disk and click on the desktop icon for my zip drive, I get this message:

Could not mount device.
The reported error was:
mount: can't find /dev/hdb4 in /etc/fstab or /etc/mtab

It looks like the installer failed to finish setting it up. How do I fix this so I can access my zip drive?

Could you attach /var/log/installer/syslog, /var/log/installer/partman, and /etc/fstab to this bug so that I have a little more context, please?

Actually, I am running Kubuntu 6.10 now and I prefer that version, since I can now sync my Palm Pilot.

The zip drive problem still exists, but it is a little different on Kubuntu 6.10. On 6.06, I had an icon on my desktop for the zip drive but I couldn't use it. On 6.10, I don't see an icon on my desktop at all. I'll attach the 6.10 logs momentarily. I'd prefer fixing 6.10 first, since that's what I'm using. Thanks!

It doesn't look like your Zip drive was inserted during the installation, only your Maxtor hard disk, so there's no way the installer could have known to set it up. I'm reassigning (by guesswork; I might be slightly wrong) to kdebase; it's likely some component of KDE is putting the icon on the desktop, and should also deal with mounting it properly.

That doesn't make sense. Other distros that I routinely install, like
SUSE 10, detect the zip drive without any problem. (And its the exact
same computer - I'm using a computer that has a swappable hard drive,
and I'm always switching between hard drives with different OS's
installed on them.) Because other OS's, including Windows and other
Linux distros, detect and use the zip drive fine, I know the zip drive
is seated properly on the motherboard.

Are you saying I need to have a zip disk in the zip drive during
installation?

No, the only reason I mentioned that is that that's the only way that
the installer could really become involved. I think the installed
system, probably chiefly the desktop environment given how things like
this are done these days, should get removable media right regardless of
what's plugged in at installation time. By and large it already does, so
I'm hoping that this is a small tweak.

Ok, that's what I thought. Thanks for clarifying.

Is this still an issue in a newer version of Ubuntu? (Testing with Kubuntu Intrepid would be appreciated)
